Research in the Matrix Dynamics Lab focuses on the the emergence of tissue architecture during embryonic development, its regeneration during wound healing, and how cells generate mesoscopic 3D structures by modifying the extracellular matrix (ECM). The major cellular effectors of ECM remodelling are the matrix metalloproteinases - a complex family of zinc-dependent proteases collectively capable of digesting all of the protein components of the ECM. The regulation of MMP activity is excruciatingly complex, and is central to the normal and pathological remodelling of the ECM. We have developed a variety of novel techniques that allow us to visualize the activity of MMPs, and crucial regulatory processes governing these activities, in the zebrafish embryo. We use high performance computing for advanced image processing, structural chemistry modelling, and bioinformatics analysis as part of this research.
