Agilent 7890B Series Gas Chromatograph coupled to an Agilent 7697A Headspace Sampler for nitrous oxi

A heaspace is created by gently displacing 10 ml of water by ultra-pure helium in a 20 ml vial. The sample is shaken for 10 min and placed in the headspace sampler for 15 min for gas equilibration at 40 C.  The gas then goes through a 1 ml loop and is transferred to a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture detector (GC-ECD) for nitrous oxide measurement.  (Methane measurements are now possible).

The cycling of the three key chemical controls on life in the ocean (carbon, oxygen, & nitrogen) is undergoing unprecedented change in the oceans as a result of human activities. We aim to observeunderstand, and predict complex interactions within these biogeochemical cycles, which will help us understand the implications of these changes for marine life and the climate. 

The CERC.OCEAN laboratory is focused on chemical oceanography and in the measurement of greenhouse gases, such as nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and halocarbons. The laboratory is equipped with high-tech instruments, such as isotope ratio mass spectrometers, gas chromatographs, cavity ring down spectrometers and nutrient autoanalyzer.
