The Aquatic Research Cluster (ARC) utilizes functional genomics and molecular biology tools and techniques to support aquatic-based research conducted in (or in collaboration with) the Department of Ocean Sciences, Memorial University of Newfoundland. Primarily fish and invertebrate samples are submitted to ARC for preparation (e.g. RNA and DNA isolation) and then subjected to downstream analyses [e.g. real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis, suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) cDNA library construction, microarray analysis, DNA subcloning]. Assays for qPCR are custom-designed and subjected to quality assurance testing. Data analysis is conducted by ARC and can include graphing and statistical analysis. Data, methods and results can be prepared for publication. Training is provided to undergraduate honours students, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and staff on all of the aforementioned tools, techniques and data analysis methods.
