Medical Education and Laboratory Support Services (MELLS) is an education and laboratory support service unit responsible for the technical personnel, and the set up of high quality laboratory teaching sessions, anatomy and core research facility support.
The core research facility support includes the production of the highest quality histological slides; transmission electron microscopy micrographs; flow cytometry analysis; microscopy digital image analysis and prints; and confocal microscopy imaging.

We are a well-established biological, clinical, and research electron microscopy facility. The unit operates on a fee-for-service basis, and is available to internal and external users. We also provide a clinical biopsy service.
Tecnai Spirit Transmission Electron Microscope for biological science features optical systems specifically designed to deliver high-quality imaging and resolution of biological specimens. The microscope is equipped with a 4 megapixel AMG digital camera. Operating voltage up to 120V. Most biological imaging is performed at 100X to 100,000X.
We provide aseptic cell sorting up to 6 ways.
Simultaneous detection and sorting of a wide range of particle sizes (down to 0.1 um).
The unit operates on a fee-for-service basis, and is available to both internal and external users.
3 Lasers-405/488/640 nm with 11 parameters
Cell sorting up to six-ways.
Collection into microtitre plates, slides, centrifuge tubes.
All samples must be filtered with a 40 micron nylon mesh cell strainer prior to sorting.
Programs for analysis include: Summit and Kaluza.
The unit operates on a fee-for-service basis, and is available to both internal and external users.We provide training on instrumentation.
3 lasers, blue (488nm), red (638nm), violet (405nm)
Trimming and cutting of resin embedded blocks. We can cut semi-thin (1um) and ultra thin sections (80-100 nm).
Automatic ultramicrotome with a diamond knife.
