Our multi-disciplinary lab focuses on helping to solve applied processing challenges through engineering services and fundamental/research-based process development. We are equiped with several unique characterization instruments and pilot-processing facilities for small-scale testing, and have experience working with the following industries:
Heavy oil upgrading - Simulation of process internal modification effects on reactor performance
Potash Processing - Implementation of static mixing technology to replace aging potash flotation reagent preparation vessels with in-line mixing technology. We have also developed and applied new on-line monitoring techniques using FT-NIR and solid-sampling techniques to accelerate QA.
Aquaculture - We have worked with NovaEel and the Aquatron in growth trials to model the generation, accumulation and removal of nutrients and additives during growth trials, providing information on scale-up implications and future effluent treatment requirements
Aquaponics - We have provided nutrient modeling analysis, engineering design services and process scale-up analysis of large-scale aquaponics facilities currently in construction within the province
Adsorbent/catalyst characterization - We have several on-going applications exploring adsorbents for applications ranging from Excimer lasers to batteries. Our lab is equiped with a BET-pore size analyser capable of determining surface area and pore size distribution, and we collaborate with several groups in the university to enable solids-modification and characterization. We are also currently collaborating with CBU on the development of Oxidative Desulfurization catalysts.
Aginates - We are also engaged in alginate-based/ceramic structure production (3-D printing and bioproduction).
Our lab also specializes in CFD/experimental coupled studies, with several previous projects in this area and on-going collaborations.
